Surgical Vs. Non-Surgical Nose Job

If you’ve always wished you could reshape your nose, you have two options to consider: surgical and non-surgical rhinoplasty. The former is clearly a surgical procedure requiring anesthesia, while the latter uses dermal filler injections on certain parts of the nose.

Let’s take a closer look at both options to help you determine which is best for your needs courtesy of your favorite Beverly Hills dermatologists:

Surgical Nose Job

A surgical nose job is used to to shape the facial feature so it appears smaller, wider, shorter, or longer. It also used to change the tip or bridge of the nose to make it more conventionally attractive. Since the procedure requires removal of bone and or cartilage, results are permanent. This form of rhinoplasty is also used to correct breathing issues, such as those caused by a crooked or deviated septum.

Surgical nose jobs are done one of two ways, closed or open. When performing open rhinoplasty, the surgeon creates small, irregular incisions on the columella for easy access to nasal tissue. In a closed surgery, the incision is made inside the nose and never cuts the columella to change nose shape.

Since this type of surgery is just that–surgery–patients need assistance in going home. They must stay in their homes for 24 hours following surgery and take painkillers, steroids, and antibiotics to heal flesh. External sutures are removed after four or five days, and wearing a hat to protect the nose from the sun is imperative in the weeks after surgery.

Bruising, blood clots, and swelling are all common following the procedure.

Non-Surgical Nose Job

Non-surgical nose jobs are performed by strategically injecting the nose with assorted dermal fillers. The patient is awake the entire time and no anesthesia nor cutting is required. A quick, simplistic procedure, non-surgical nose jobs add volume to areas of the nose, or smooth and refine as needed. Results last six months to a year depending on the type of filler utilized. Recovery time is practically non-existent, and side effects minimal.

Considered a fantastic way to “preview” how a “new nose” looks, it’s also ideal for those who don’t want to deal with the pain and expense of surgery. And unlike surgery, results are instant.
