What are spider and varicose veins?

Spider veins are small, thin veins that lie close to the surface of the skin and appear blue, red or purple in color.  Spider veins most often occur on the legs, but can be on the face or elsewhere on the body.  Men and women dislike them because they are unsightly.

Varicose veins differ from spider veins in significant ways. Varicose veins are larger than spider veins, often a quarter-inch in diameter. They tend to bulge and are darker in color. They can be painful and may indicate more serious disorders of the veins.
