Juvederm Injections

Wrinkles and sagging skin begin to develop when the structural elements of the dermis begin to break down. These elements which give the skin structure are collagen, hyaluronic acid, and elastin fibers. Hyaluronic acid acts as a network onto which collagen and elastin fibers bind. Therefore, without it, wrinkles, jowls and volume loss occurs. Replacing the structural element, hyaluronic acid, is therefore an obvious way to get rid of wrinkles, folds, sagging and volume loss. Juvederm is hyaluronic acid.

Where is Juverderm Used?

The two sorts of Juvederm may be used on the face where volume has been lost creating a sunken appearance. For example in the mid cheek area, if Juvederm is applied, the sunken appearance abates and a slight lift and pull occurs that eradicates the need for it in the naso-labial fold (the fold between the nose and the mouth). It can also be used to fill in fine lines, wrinkles, hollow places and scars on the face.

For many dermatologists, Juvederm has become the filler of choice for lip augmentation. It is the substance that is softest when injected into the lip line and can be molded easily to produce the effect desired by the patient. Patients who have had other fillers in their lips report that Juvederm almost immediately feels as if nothing were injected.

How Juverderm Works

Hyaluronic acid is the lattice onto which collagen and elastin fibers bind. It also absorbs water and thus, is a hydrating agent.

Juvederm is injected into the appropriate areas that concern the patient the most, the areas that have changed the most as they have aged. It is injected with a very small, fine needle, and the substance itself contains an anesthetic, making the treatment quite comfortable.

The treatment is performed in the office in 15-30 minutes. The results are immediate.

How Long Does the Effect Last?

Each patient absorbs and breaks down dermal fillers differently. Each area of the face, depending on the degree of movement, will lose the effect at different rates. Also, different factors may effect how long the treatment lasts. For example, with sun exposure, the substance may abate more quickly. On the average, Juvederm lasts for about six to twelve months.

Is the Procedure Painful?

The very small needles that are used combined with the fact that anesthetic is mixed into the substance makes the treatment very easy to tolerate. The minimal discomfort present at first, fades quickly as the anesthetic takes effect.

Potential Juvederm Side Effects

As with any treatment in the face that is injected, bruising may occur and is quite common. We encourage the patients to start Arnica pills three days prior to treatment and to continue it until bruising disappears. Also, we have Arnica Cream at the Kopelson Clinic that is applied directly to the bruise. Recently we have started using one of our lasers the day after treatment on any bruised areas with impressive results. After treatment with the laser, bruising disappears quickly. If possible, aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents (Advil, Motrin, Aleve) should be avoided 10 days prior to treatment in an attempt to minimize bruising. Patients with cardiac disease must ask their cardiologist before changing or discontinuing their medications.

Other possible yet uncommon side effects include swelling, nodule formation and a bluish tint caused by the product being visible through the skin. Swelling and bruising disappear in a few days and the other side effects can usually be corrected by your physician. You are encouraged to call and come in if you have any side effects as most are correctable.

Are You a Good Candidate for Juvederm?

Juvederm can be used on any patient regardless of race. However, in order to decide which anti-aging treatment is best for a particular patient, it is necessary that they meet the physician performing the treatment and discuss all possible methods of skin rejuvenation.
